2002 Porsche 911 GT2
(RUF RT550)
Just 9,000 miles from new, and 1 of just 5 known to exist.
Founded in 1939 by Alois Ruf Sr, Ruf Automobile is a family-owned company based in the heart of Bavaria, Germany which specializes in the re-engineering of Porsche vehicles. Over the last eight decades the RUF name has come to be known for engineering excellence, authenticity, passion, and raw driving through their attention to detail and craftsmanship that is embodied in each and every RUF car that leaves their headquarters in Pfaffenhausen.
In 1963, Alois Sr. helped the driver of a crashed Porsche 356, later buying and repairing the damaged car. This incident ignited a lifelong passion for Porsche in both him and his son, Alois Ruf Jr. By 1960, their garage was already servicing and restoring Porsches. When Alois Sr. passed away in 1974, Alois Jr. took over and pivoted the company's entire focus to performance-oriented Porsche enhancements.
Perhaps the most celebrated creation from RUF was the now-haloed CTR, nicknamed the "Yellowbird" by Road & Track. It became the fastest production car in the world at the time, reaching 211 mph (339.8 km/h) and outperforming the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959. The 1989 film Faszination auf dem Nürburgring, featuring driver Stefan Roser drifting the Yellowbird around the Nordschleife, became a legendary piece of automotive media. In addition to the headquarters of Ruf Automobile GmbH and its subsidiary Ruf Service Center in Pfaffenhausen, today the company is recognized as a manufacturer and is represented in the US, Canada, Chile, Great Britain, China, Thailand and Japan.
Stepping into the watercooled era, Porsche began production of the 996 chassis in late 1998, but the pinniciale of this design period is represented by GT2-specification cars, produced between 2001 and 2005. Often referred to by the nickname "Widowmaker" due to their combination of high power, rear-wheel drive, and a complete lack of electronic driver aids such as traction or stability control, the GT2 was designed as a lighter, faster, and more aggressive version of the 911 Turbo. Significantly rarer than its GT3 counterpart with only 1,287 units produced globally, all GT2s were equipped with a 6-speed manual transaxle, and a 200lb weight savings was achieved primarily through the deletion of the rear seats and front differential assembly.
According to the clean CARFAX on file, this particular example was sold new to the United States and delivered in June of 2002. It was equipped from the factory with a limited slip differential, the X50 powerpack, and finished in Seal Grey Metallic over black leather with a $187,235 total MSRP. After being diligently serviced at 460, 1,100, and 1,345 miles, the first owner opted to export the GT2 to RUF in Germany for a RT550 Package upgrade. In transit the GT2 evidently sustained damage.
Over the next five months RUF GmbH in Pfaffenhausen performed a comprehensive rebuild around an entirely new body shell in white (Porsche part number 990), documented by a corresponding 2003 invoice totaling $97,000 USD. The motorsport-derived 3.6L twin-turbocharged "Mezger" flat-six engine was rebuilt to RT550 specifications becoming one of only five 996 GT2s known to have been built by Alois Ruf. A letter to a previous owner further documents the exacting build process: "The vehicle was completely rebuilt in our factory in 2003". "The remanufacturing process was identical to that used for our new RUF cars". The specifications included the following:
RUF upgrades:RT550 engine / turbos / ECU / cats / exhaust (achieving 600HP on the dyno)
Integrated roll cage
RUF front bumper design
Upgraded ceramic brakes
Upgraded suspension
RUF modular wheels with 315mm rear tires
Reinforced clutch
The car returned to US soil in November of that same year and saw services at 3,300 and 5,300 miles before being sold to the second owner in July of 2010, with just 8,400 miles indicated. Shortly thereafter the car saw a fluids service and the replacement of the spark plugs, ignition coils, and battery, before joining the significant collection of its third owner, where it enjoyed the company of many other potent Porsche and RUF automobiles in Luxembourg. Here it remained for 10 years, seldom used but regularly serviced including new tires in 2026.
Today, this GT2 RT550 has travelled less than 10,000 miles in total and presents virtually as-new, with no cosmetic marks of significance owing to its low mileage and highly curated ownership in recent years.
With a performance specification that includes a 211 mph top speed and almost 600hp on the dyno, this example will out-accelerate and out-stop any standard 996 GT2, while at the same time boasting elevated rarity, with just 4 other examples known to have been originally built at Ruf Automobile in Pfaffenhausen, Germany. Representing the pinnacle of Porsche's early water cooled era, this GT2 RT550 offers the engineering excellence and the raw driving experience Alois Ruf has become so respected for.
